From my room in Nocelle

veiled in mist the Mediterranean is three km below
here the inky night spills
into my screen lit corner a grid
of webinar faces reading triptychs
a poem and an essay about waves in three summer spots one wrote
the other said her daughter’s ashes live in the ocean
ashes live in the ocean

so you are right here as all seas are linked
Punjab’s rivers mix then run to the Arabian sea the Suez enters
the Mediterranean
nineteen years ago, you and I walked this lapped land
today I rode a bus to this village alone
then wet in half hearted raindrops
up and down stone steps to my homestay in the gloaming
a thick slice of lemon cake from the kitchen

was to be my dinner for now
the village kitchens are closing as we stop
our meditations and I pen
words on waves above the waves I have just found you in
while this home’s door remains unlocked
