Transition

1 story every 3 weeks from September until December

In this issue, we consider transition as a threshold – a space through which we pass while something fundamental is changing. We traverse the tenuous territory between what once was and what might come next. But transition is not always chosen. Instead, our contributors show us people moved by bodies, families, institutions, power, labour and memory, illuminating the moments when what seemed stable gives way.

Jessica Ojiugo Chinonye (Nwafor) lays bare what is at stake when violence against Nigerian women goes unchecked and witness fades to blame. Hospital rooms and corridors serve as places of passage, both mundane and extraordinary, for Ora Redmark. Debbie Hopkins shows us the roads, motorways and depots where existence is defined by movement. Past and present collide in a moment of familial nostalgia for Joe Del Castillo. And Mathew Wood shows us the incremental progression of psychological collapse through the monotonous detachment of hospital records.
